Jeebus, they were out in force. Sneaky bastards shooting radar from overpasses and shit. Glad I changed my waze name, just for them.

I've read that cops are using the app and randomly placing "speed trap" icons all over the maps just so people using the app won't have accurate information about where cops actually are.

I would imagine that to be the truth, but I saw every one of these and more that I didnt want to report because 1. it was so dense with them, and 2. I didnt want to get nabbed for phone use

I've been seeing that lately, but it's still better than not having Waze.

You can set it up so that you don't even have to touch your phone. There's a setting so if you wave near it, it will let you report using voice.

That's insane man. I always drive past two cops in the mornings. They are always at the same place. Guarding the US Ambassadors residence, which I drive underneath (it's up on a cliff) and the cops' of course guarding the Prime Minister's house.

:D

yeah, even the hover over it I worry about since they have been on cell phone crack down lately. I dont even want to go near it. Both hands on the wheel, phone in the dock on the windshield

Fortunately for me on my 20 mile drive to work each day on I-75 north of Detroit, I see no less than 10 cars with flat tires off to the side so the cops are always behind those cars flashing their lights while they make the tire change. Potholes like a mofo. #puremichigan

I think that's personally hilarious. They're setting it up so that people won't speed and thus won't get tickets.

If that's what the police want to do, I think they're more than welcome to it.

Kinja'd!!! 450X_FTW > spanfucker retire bitch

Tickets don't make people slow down anyway, seeing a cop is what makes people slow down, along with common sense (be it not enough of the time) when there's traffic, weather, construction, safety, etc

Cops where I live are out in force on my friday morning ride home, but my car is too slow for them to care. It's like I have a cloaking device...

Kinja'd!!! 505Turbeaux > PS9
02/27/2015 at 09:06

Kinja'd!!!1

yeah they don't mess with the Mercedes wagon, but I rarely speed. I should say fuck it and not care, but I take issue with the technique of enforcement. A cop shooting radar hidden behind the jersey barrier on a bridge with a line of cops behind the bridge is so much less safe and effective than being visible in a marked car parked in plain sight. You should see how many people jack on the brakes and change lanes as soon as they realize there are 10+ cops lined up behind the bridge, even more so when they are pulling out to make a stop

I had to, my old one indicated what kind of car I drive, and I am a prolific wazer, one of the top Wazers in the country actually

Kinja'd!!! spanfucker retire bitch > 450X_FTW
02/27/2015 at 09:07

Kinja'd!!!1

Right, so if they look on Waze and see there's a cop ahead (when there's really not) they'll slow down, not knowing if it's a false report or not.

So people are driving safer and less tickets are being handed out because people think the cops are everywhere and they're now cutting into the ticket revenue stream.

There's no downside to this.

It's easy to rack up Waze karma when there's that many visible speed traps in one's daily commute :) Seriously, though - thank you for being awesome on Waze because it just doesn't work without committed users like us.

That section of road has to be the most copped up road in this whole state.

Kinja'd!!! 450X_FTW > spanfucker retire bitch
02/27/2015 at 09:14

Kinja'd!!!0

It's basically a win-win for the drivers really. I mean the cops want people to drive safer........but then they don't get any revenue. Have to make up some new laws then, maybe driving with a blue shirt will be a $100 fine in the future for no reason other than they can.

Kinja'd!!! Meatcoma > 450X_FTW
02/27/2015 at 09:18

Kinja'd!!!1

yea but the first waze user that comes across that speed trap and notices it isn't there can click the 'Not There' button and it will go away, so it's kind of pointless and in my opinion a waste of time and money for cops to be sitting there supplying misinformation to the citizens they are supposed to be protecting.

I think I am going on 3 years of service to the cause. I used to be one of a very few in my state, but I diligently reported so others could see the value of it, even though it kind of sucked that I was on the front line. My investment has paid off. Funny when I head Downeast though, sometimes I see a random report once in a great while or get a thanks. I want to know who those people are because they are now the front line

Kinja'd!!!1

so how current, or what should i say... immediate... is waze?

seems like the number of active users would fall short of making it useful. i used a different app maybe 4 years ago. but it was dreadfully lacking. seemed like every warning was a false alarm.

Kinja'd!!! 505Turbeaux > DrScientist
02/27/2015 at 09:26

Kinja'd!!!1

it does depend on the level of useage. In PA/NY/MA/CT it is highly effective because you have a large base of active users. It is becoming that in Maine too. There are of course false alarms, but once it is flagged "not there" a few times it goes away. There is an algorithm in there that calculates the number of wazers that go past to adjust the length of time a report is kept live too. Google didn't buy it for nothing! :)

I use it in DC, San Fran, and a lot of big interstates. Plenty of users in those areas and the reports are probably about 85% current/correct...you do get some obnoxious stuff like cops eating lunch or people that report 'potholes' when the road is already patched hoping to get thanks out of it...not too bad though. It has a sufficient user base if you drive pretty much anywhere in the US with moderate (or higher) traffic volume.

Careful being too dependent on the detector, when the cops upgrade to Laser it's pretty much useless. It'll still say "yo you're getting zapped" but it's too late as the info is instant. (they're all moving to laser for better accuracy and quicker info)
